How Long Does Paintball Last: An Exploration
Paintball's Origins
Paintball, in its current state, was developed in 1981 in the United States, when 12 friends gathered on an open field and tested the newly purchased Nel-spot 007 paintball guns. The paintball guns were launched onto the market in 1982, but the first ideas of using paint for recreational and constructive purposes date back to the 1950s when people used agricultural marking guns to assess their crops.
The first organized competition took place in 1986, at a ranch located outside Houston, Texas. The first paintball tournament was called the National Survival Game, which was eventually adopted by the NPPL (National Professional Paintball League) in 2011 as the first professional paintball league in the country.
Popular Paintball Variants
In 1994, the UKPSF (United Kingdom Paintball Sport Federation) launched a program that would allow teams to participate in 7-man,5-man, and pro tournaments. Everything evolved with time, and now there are various different variations of paintball: from Speedball to X-ball, Woodsball, and much more.
Speedball, the most popular game play, is usually played on small, inflatable, plastic bunkers and two teams compete for a set amount of time (round time). The course usually consists of two sides, with paintball-filled bunkers symmetrically placed on each side.
Game Play Length
It's important to note that, when we talk about paintball, the game's length can vary depending on the type of game being played, the number of players, the type of field, and other numerous factors.
Usually, when playing speedball, the rounds are 10 minutes long, no matter the number of players participating. When playing woodsball, the game length can vary more. There is no real set length for woodsball, some games last 10-15 minutes, and some can last 3 to 4 hours.
Equipment Requirements
Regardless of whether you're playing speedball or woodsball, you'll need to have the right kind of equipment. Of course, the main component for any paintball match is the type of gun you'll be using. Paintball guns come in a variety of models, from the cheaper entry-level models with basic designs, to the higher-end, more advanced models. Generally, paintball guns come in two categories - mechanical and electronic.
Commissioned Facilities and Rules
In the recent years, more and more commercial paintball facilities have been established, allowing players to try out different formats with set rules and objectives. These commercial facilities also make available items such as barrels, gun-bags, protective masks, and more.
Commissioned facilities usually have their own set of rules, but most of them stipulate that minors must be accompanied by adequate adult supervision. Paintball can be a dangerous sport, hence liming players' allowed speed to a certain limit is also important to maintain security. Additionally, the set rules might call for a minimum age of participation, proper attire, and the banning of any physical contact between players.
